Violet (Vi) Hicks Holden died June 19 at The Henrietta Brewer House in Vineyard Haven, her home for the last four years, attended by a loving and caring staff.

She was born to Ernest and Laura (Chaulk) Hicks on Nov. 1, 1923 in Carmanville, Newfoundland. She moved with her parents in 1940 to join her sisters in New York, N.Y., then to Teaneck, N.J., where she met Gifford M. Holden Jr., a West Point graduate class of 1945. He was a pilot in The U.S. Air Force. They married in 1951 and were stationed overseas amid different stateside assignments until their retirement in 1974. Her family moved to the Vineyard in 1950. After Vineyard vacations with her parents they bought the Dr. Watkins home on Lagoon Road, Oak Bluffs in 1952 and retired there in 1974. She attended New York schools and The Dayton Institute of Art. Her profession was textile and rug designing. Flowers were her favorite subject.

She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her sister Asenath H. Crowley. She is survived by her sister Marie H. Edgar; her nephews, R. Scott (Anna) Edgar of Red Hook, N.Y., Donald B. (Jill) Edgar of Oak Bluffs, and Stephen B. (Mary) Kessler of Princeton; her brother in law, Kenneth J. (Shirley) Holden and their children Kathy and Kenney of Batavia, Ill., also grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins in the U.S., Newfoundland and Ontario, Canada.

A graveside service was held in the Oak Grove cemetery on Pacific avenue in Oak Bluffs on Monday, June 22, officiated by the Rev. Roger Spinney.
