Shirley Black Timmins of Rensselaer, Ind., died on Thursday, May 21 at the Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer, where she had been a resident since 1991 after moving from Washington, Iowa. She was 88.

She was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Edgartown to the late William A. and Pearl L. Norton Black. She graduated from the Edgartown high school in 1938, and married Marion L. Timmins, who was in the U.S. Coast Guard, on August 14, 1943, in Edgartown. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1985, in Washington, Iowa.

Shirley worked with her husband managing and running the family dairy and grain farm in West Chester, Iowa. She was a woman of deep faith and an active member of the United Methodist Church in West Chester and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Antioch Neighbors Club in West Chester, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and was on the board of the Rensselaer Meals on Wheels.

She enjoyed her loving family as well as the beauty of nature, walking the beach looking for shells, bird-watching, dogs of all kinds and traveling to many parts of the world. Her love and passion for the Island remained with her throughout her entire life.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Reiners (and her husband Richard), and Abbie Parmele (and her husband Paul), both of Rensselaer, Ind.; three grandchildren, Ashley Reiners, Lesley Conn and Logan Parmele; and two great-grandchildren, Haevyn Gorin and Ayla Conn.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her one brother, John L. Black, all of Edgartown.
