Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Ronald Briscoe Jeffers who passed away on July 17 at his home surrounded by his family. Ronald, the youngest son of the late Otis P. Jeffers Sr. and Thelma V. Randolph, was born and raised on the Vineyard that he loved so dearly and especially the ancestral lands of Aquinnah. Ronnie was a veteran of the Korean War and returned to work for the Massachusetts state highway department from which he in 1992 after a long career. He was the husband of the late Jeananne Beattie Jeffers, who passed away in August 2007. He was the father of Audrey Jeffers-Mayhew and Michael Gilman. Ronnie is also survived by his grandsons Paul Henry Jeffers-Mayhew and Peyton Briscoe, who called him “Ga,” as well as his brother Otis P. Jeffers Jr. of Hollywood, Fla. A graveside service will be held on August 1 at 11 a.m. at the North Cemetery in Aquinnah, with services conducted by Reverend Roger H. Spinney and the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.

Condolences to the family and friends of Walter Cronkite who passed away in New York this past week. He was a favorite of many around the Vineyard over the past 30 years, always very friendly and generous to many causes that assist one and all. As we all know, he was the most informative and trusted newscaster and his broadcasts were not to be missed if we wanted to learn what was really going on in the world.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center will be sponsoring an All Native Artisans Festival on Saturday, July 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Vanderhoop Homestead on Aquinnah Circle.

The Aquinnah Public Library hosted Mark Lovewell on Thursday evening with a discussion of Vineyard catboats. On July 30 at 5 p.m. Aquinnah author and Swarthmore Professor Phil Weinstein will discuss Becoming Faulkner.

The Aquinnah Public Library continues with story hour for children every Saturday at 11 a.m. and with art time every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for those five years of age and older.

Dance, by Aquinnah choreographer Lucinda Childs, will be at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26. The presentation will be sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. For further information and for tickets, please call 508-645-9662.

Murray Lerner, documentary film producer, has recently directed films on the Moody Blues, Leonard Cohen, and the late Isaac Stern on the 30th anniversary of his performance in China in a film From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China.

Michael Sellitti will be 18 years old on July 28. Hollis Smith will party on July 29. Pauline Galbraith parties on July 30 and shares the day with Christopher Laursen. Bernadette Crossland will celebrate on July 31.
