Islanders have a rare chance this weekend to see the creative process revealed in words and movement, when Carolyn Dorfman presents what is being called an intimate evening of dance, dialogue and discovery. The choreographer is an Island favorite — last year her dance company performed Mayne Mentshn at the Performing Arts Center; in the spring, she and her dancers taught in Vineyard elementary schools; in 2006, her company performed The Klezmer Sketch here in a program that also included Urban Bush Women and a piece with Island children performing.
Saturday’s interactive lecture/performance is titled Origins: From Inception to Creation, Dorfman and Dancers Share the Process and Craft of Choreography. It will be at 8 p.m. at the Yard in Chilmark.
A Yard affiliate artist, Ms. Dorfman brings four members of her company to construct and deconstruct selections from her repertory — including The Klezmer Sketch, Cat’s Cradle, Love Suite Love, and her newest work, Tikkun — to share the choreographic process. Moving from concept to structure, metaphor to movement and other design choices, Ms. Dorfman will invite the audience to delve into the choreographer’s palette and world of creation. “Who knows, perhaps we’ll start a new work that evening,” she said in a statement.
Ms. Dorfman is known as a creator of provocative dances that reflect her concerns about the human condition. Yard artistic director Wendy Taucher called Ms. Dorfman “a master of her craft, which makes her a model and mentor for our young artists. It’s important to us to present the kind of work she makes — high quality, meaningful work. She’s brought so much to Martha’s Vineyard over the years, in the schools and on the stage.”
Tickets are $25 general seating, $50 premium and $15 for seniors and under-30s.
Ms. Dorfman is also offering an open dance technique and choreography class on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Yard. Cost is $15, no preregistration is necessary.
