Corrine Elizabeth Averill Hatt died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 13 in her Edgartown home surrounded by her loving family.

Corrine was born on July 4, 1946 and spent her entire life on Martha’s Vineyard. She graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School class of 1964. In her early years she worked as a telephone operator. She operated the Hatt Rack Sewing & Alterations. Corrine later worked as the smiling face of the Edgartown Post Office, retiring with 20 years of service. She also worked as an emergency medical technician for the Edgartown service.

She loved to travel to Mexico and Arizona and especially Nantucket to visit her son and his family. She was a great card player and avid reader. She was a member of the Oriental Chapter of Eastern Star and a member of the Holy Ghost Society.

She was a caring mentor and compassionate friend to others suffering with cancer. She was a founding member of the Relay for Life on Martha’s Vineyard.

She is survived by her husband Richard Stone of Edgartown; her sons Richard Marshall and his wife, Erin, of Nantucket and Gregory Marshall of Vineyard Haven; her loving granddaughters, Sara and Emma Marshall of Nantucket; her father, Preston W. Averill Sr. and his wife, Gerry, of Vineyard Haven; her brother, Preston W. Averill Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Oak Bluffs and Ariz.; her sister, Lorraine Leonard of Groton as well as several nieces and nephews and countless close friends. Corrine was predeceased by her mother, Eileen Averill, and her sister, Diane M. Averill.

Memorial visiting hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. in the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown with the Rev. Roger Spinney officiating.
