The 12th Annual Aquinnah Power Cruise will be held on Saturday, June 14, at noon around Aquinnah Circle, an event once again organized by Carl Widdiss. The Boston Area Roadsters Club will make their annual trek to the Vineyard for the weekend. The special interest cars, hot rods, and antiques will travel from the Wesley House in Oak Bluffs to arrive at the Cliffs around noon. The Vineyard Transit Authority bus will stop at the Circle for spectators wishing to avoid the traffic and the cost of fuel: day passes are $6 each and only $3 each for senior citizens. Vineyarders with special interest cars are invited to attend as everyone gathers in the circle for the afternoon in the sun and the friendship of fellow roadsters.

Speaking of the VTA bus passes, Ann Burt was so pleased to let me know how much she enjoys her bus pass which allows her frequent jaunts to Menemsha to visit with friends, to shop, or to just walk around. She noted that she and Ann Matthewson Howes are both frequent riders now that they have discovered the rate for senior citizens to obtain their passes. So, if you are an senior citizen and do not have your pass yet, please stop by the Up-Island Council on Aging for the pass and the bus schedule rather than sit at home and complain about the price of fuel. The VTA is trying to be part of the solution.

Roxanne Ackerman returned home this past week after spending a few weeks with her mother, Barbara Ackerman, in San Jose, Calif. Upon return, her family treated Roxanne to her birthday celebration dinner and cake to observe the major milestone. As the town school committee member, Roxanne was delighted to return in time to attend the festivities for Peg Regan, departing as principal of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

Michele Bessett and her husband Bob Iwaskiewicz are at their Lobsterville Road home. While here, they immensely enjoy the Aquinnah Shop and especially the breakfast fare of fish cakes and eggs, Lobster Newberg omelettes, blue corn waffles and pancakes, fresh fruit, muffins and Danish. They are grateful for the homemade items on the menu and such variety. They appreciate the fact that the Aquinnah Shop is a family-owned gem, serving good food at very reasonable prices where you can bring the family, in a location that is beautiful beyond belief, and which also offers Luther Madison’s delicious homemade pies.

Dr. Thomas Green will be arriving with family and friends over the next week in preparation for his birthday celebration. He will celebrate his birthday on June 20 with his high school friends from all over the United States. They also enjoy the Sunday service at Community Baptist Church which is close by to Tom’s home.

James Hakenson, son of Robert Hakenson and Sandra Moreis, is an Aquinnah tribal member who also graduated on Sunday from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. James is a championship dancer, and is a member of the Black Brook Drum. He has worked during the school year in the planning department for the tribe. He spent the summer of 2007 working as an interpreter at Plimoth Plantation and will be returning to Plimoth once again this summer.

Congratulations and all the best to Charles Hopkins and his bride-to- be, Allison Virostek Pfosi, as they celebrate their marriage on June 14 amid family and friends.

Congratulations and all the best to Kyle Killebrew who graduated from Rancho High School on June 9 with high honors. Rancho is a magnet school which in addition to regular subjects, also specializes in classes in the medical field for students who wish to become doctors or nurses. Kyle wants to become an orthodontist. Toward this end, Kyle will begin by attending the University of Nevada at Reno next autumn. Over this past year, Kyle has assisted in either a dentist’s office or an orthodontist’s office for three afternoons a week – almost like an intern, so he appears to be well on his way.

For all of his accomplishments, his grandparents John Occouch Vanderhoop and his wife Gabi, and his parents Eric Killebrew and his wife Antonia, gave Kyle a combined birthday and graduation party this past weekend as they are all very proud of him. Kyle is also the son of the late Christina Suzanne Vanderhoop.

Welcome to Bill and Joan Kistner as they arrived on Thursday to spend the week with our grandson Noah James Manning. They are especially here as we all gather to celebrate Noah’s second birthday and to wish him the best as he gathers with all of his little friends in celebration.

Chief F. Ryan Malonson arrived home on Wednesday after spending the past week at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where he underwent emergency orthopedic surgery. Thanks to young Benjamin Booker for hearing Ryan’s call for help and alerting his father, Aquinnah emergency medical technician Spencer Booker, who then assisted Ryan in his time of need.

The Mayrand family has been as busy as ever. Mike will be celebrating a major milestone on June 14 and will probably “float in a boat somewhere and fish.” Carol is enjoying tending her garden, which flourishes. Their daughter Alyssa just received a promotion to wedding consultant at Priscilla’s of Boston — so if any Vineyarder is getting married and trying to find that special gown or even bridesmaid dresses, please call Alyssa for a Vineyard touch while in the big city. Daughter Sonya is home from Keene State and is back at work at the Outermost Inn once again, this year as breakfast waitress and evening hostess. Their son Noah has completed his freshman year at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. He has returned as the co-manager of the town parking lot and is also cooking with Chefworks Catering Company.

Shauna Potter, daughter of Kevin and Cheryle, will be graduating from high school in Rhode Island this month and will be off to nursing school in September.

Sophia will be attending Bard College. For the summer, she will be working for the tribe’s natural resource department.

The Aquinnah Public Library will be sponsoring a summer benefit book sale on the porch on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, June 24, 26, and 28. Most of the books will be only $1 and will greatly benefit the programs and projects at the library. It is also time to sign up for the summer reading program.
