Sheila A. Tierney McHugh of Brighton and Chappaquiddick died July 19 from complications of lung cancer.
Sheila worked as a mail carrier on Chappaquiddick while raising her nine children, all of whom attended The Edgartown School and Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. She volunteered at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ & Girls’ Club thrift shop in Edgartown and was the owner and operator of an assisted living facility in Marathon, Fla.
She celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary in January and recently returned from a trip to Las Vegas.
She enjoyed going to Foxwoods with her daughters, playing Scrabble and reading.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph F. McHugh; her children, Joseph and his wife May of Seattle, Wash., Thomas and his wife Susan of Manchester, N.H., Margaret Naegelin and husband Matthew of Scituate, Sheila McMullen and husband Kenneth of Hopkinton, Debra Moran and husband James of Kingston, Rose Cornu and husband Tim of Hopkinton, Susan Lupinski and her husband Robert of Lee, N.H., Grace
McCormack of Sagamore and Timothy McHugh and his wife Jennifer of
Edgartown; her brothers and sisters, Teresa Farmer, Jeanne Dognazzi, Rose Palonen, Patricia, Timothy, Paul, Richard and Michael Tierney; and 21 grandchildren: Patrick, Rachel, Lauren, Kerry, Kelly, Kenneth, Brooke, Allison, Ashley, John, Nick, Nolan, Ella, Jason, Jackie, Shannon, Mary, Thomas, Jill, Megan and Cailtlin. A sister, Mary Gardner, predeceased her.
Calling hours will be held today, Tuesday, July 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lehman & Reen Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill avenue, Brighton.
A funeral Mass will be held in St. Columbkille Church, 321 Market street, Brighton on Wednesday, July 23 at 9 a.m. Interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sheila may be made to the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club, P.O. Box 654, Edgartown.
