Harold Ainsworth (Skip) Tilton Jr. of New Bedford died July 24 at the Oak Nursing Home in New Bedford. He was 60.

He was born in Oak Bluffs on Sept. 27, 1947, the son of Edna Louise Murphy and Harold A. Tilton Sr.

He was raised and went to school in Vineyard Haven. He enlisted in the Army and served during the Viet Nam War and was stationed in Germany.

When he returned, he lived in New Bedford and was a scalloper and fisherman like his father. He later worked for the City of New Bedford in the sanitation department.

Skip was the grandson of Capt. Zeb Tilton and the great-nephew of Capt. George Fred Tilton, both of whose families were of longtime Island descent.

He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and belonged to the Dirty Dozen Club.

Survivors include his brother, Timothy Tilton and wife Patricia of New Bedford, and a daughter, Kathy of Westport.

A private graveside service was held Saturday in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven officiated by the Rev. Michael Nagle. Military honors were provided by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.
