Joseph Paterson Kenney Was World War Veteran
Joseph Paterson Kenney died peacefully at his Vineyard Haven home on Friday, Feb. 20. Born in New York city on Sept. 30, 1925 and raised in Greenwich, Conn., he was a resident there until his retirement to Massachusetts. His parents were the late Joseph Patrick Kenney and Jeanette Patterson Kenney.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate first class during World War II and was called back for the Korean War. After the war, he worked for M&T Towing in New York city and for 40 years was a tower operator and rules examiner for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. He was a past captain and member of the Cos Cob Fire Police and Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Company. He was an avid machinist and enjoyed working on antique engines. He was a member of the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society Antique Power Engine Association.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gertrude Hall Kenney of Vineyard Haven; a daughter, Sandra H. Kenney of Vineyard Haven; a son, Joseph P. Kenney Jr. of Bridgeport, Conn.; five grandchildren, Brian Daur and Patrick Daur both of Greenwich, Conn., Douglas Asselin Jr. of Vineyard Haven, Joseph P. Kenney 3rd serving in the U.S. Navy and Lauren Kenney of Westport, Conn., and two great-grandchildren.
His graveside service and interment was held on Monday, Feb. 23, in Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven, officiated by the Rev. Roger Spinney with military honors provided by the Veterans of Martha's Vineyard. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
