Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
In Mending Wall, the poet Robert Frost wrote that “something there is that doesn’t love a wall.” I thought of this poem after reading “Super-sized Houses Are Talk of Towns” in the July 27 issue. I think I know what Frost meant.
One of Chilmark’s most beautiful and public features is its old stone walls. Recently, a new wall was built on South Road in Chilmark approximately one mile past Alley’s General Store. Its boring uniformity in a rural setting makes it a suburban eyesore that is completely out of character with Chilmark’s traditional stone walls. Put simply: It’s ugly.
As the towns of Martha’s Vineyard consider enacting new zoning regulations to protect the Island’s unique character from huge homes, I hope they will also find a way to protect the beauty of its public roads from further desecration.
