Valentine’s Day hearts and cards will be the work of the young ones and those young at heart at Aquinnah Public Library tomorrow with the assistance of Barbara Lampson. Stop in during library hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Barbara has also offered to assist college-bound seniors of Aquinnah and those already in college with a FAFSA night on Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. You will also have an opportunity to peruse the scholarship list while working on your federal student aid paperwork.

On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, the library will sponsor a chocolate tasting adventure from 3 to 5 p.m. and then view a romantic film from 5 to 7 p.m.

If you missed the Cinema Circus at the Aquinnah Public Library last evening, you still have time to see a film on Feb. 21 and again on March 7 at 5 p.m. The library staff will be serving pizza and vegetables during the films.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club has recognized the outdoor flowers and plants that are in abundance near the rear deck of the library thus making the library the recipient of a beautification award.

Reminder, the Rockin’ Away Those Winter Blues with Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish party to benefit the Chilmark School PTO and Outing Program will be held at the Chilmark Community Center tomorrow, Feb. 9, from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Live and silent auctions, dessert bar. Tickets are $15 at Menemsha Texaco or at the door.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper and service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at the First Baptist Church parish house at the corners of William and Spring streets in Tisbury. Pancakes and eggs will be served, with fellowship, games and crafts and a brief closing service to start the Lenten observances. For further information, call Reverend Ellen Tatreau at 508-693-1539.

A Mardi Gras party and pancake dinner will be held at the West Tisbury Congregational Church from 5 to 7 p.m. and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Edgartown will hold a pancake dinner beginning at 6 p.m.

The Federated Church, under the guidance of Rev. Jerry Fritz, has organized luncheons on Sundays through March. Their congregation realized that Sunday was the only day of the week on the Vineyard not having a free community supper during the winter. They will now be serving lasagna, garlic bread, salad and beverages on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Federated Church parish house on South Summer street in Edgartown. No charge and no donations.

The town nurse, Mary, will be at the Aquinnah town hall on Feb. 14 from 2 to 3 p.m. for residents to have their blood pressure checked. Chilmark Chocolates is a necessity over the weekend to get an assortment of chocolates in time for the Valentine of your choice.

If you missed the PechaKucha night last Friday evening, you missed an amazing evening with the staff from the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and presentations at the Harbor View Hotel. Roxane Ackerman and I ventured to the other end of the Island to be a part of this Vineyard adventure. PechaKucha is a presentation of 20 slides with 20 seconds per slide. The topic is your choice. On Friday evening, the slides represented artwork that had been packed away for a long time, the history of the scarab, a weekend in Manhattan at a pod hotel, a collection of archival objects from the museum, beautiful i-Phone photographs of Katama with serene music, and amazingly interesting slides to demonstrate diverse subjects. Perhaps you would consider showing 20 slides on the subject of your choice with a little description of each. The next PechaKucha will be held on March 8. Congratulations to Ella Madison Mahoney, daughter of Julianne Vanderhoop and Michael Mahoney, on being a gold key winner for her artwork through Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Ella’s prize is for one of her paintings “a wish upon a fish” in her eight-piece portfolio. Mr. Brissette should be very proud that his students received more than half of the awards this year. A nice way for him to retire from teaching this year. Winning submissions will be on display at the state transportation building at Ten Park Plaza in Boston from Feb. 11 through April 19. For now, Ella is still deciding which college to attend, but is mostly looking at the west coast.

The 90th birthday party for Bette Carroll on Jan. 30 was a wonderful evening with family and friends at the Chilmark Community Center. The music was wonderful, and good to see Bette join in on her harmonica. Everyone would ask “where is Bette?” My reply, sitting on her sofa next to the fireplace!” It was as if her living room had been recreated at the community center for the evening. I lost track of how many birthday cakes there actually were but a grand time was had by all.

Condolences to the family and friends of Linda Marinelli who served as Oak Bluffs selectman for many years.

Condolences to the family and friends of Mike Syslo who passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 29 after giving a presentation off-Island. Mike worked with the Aquinnah tribe often on issues pertaining to his position with the Division of Marine Fisheries and tribal issues.

The idea of electricity is relatively new to our town, as we became electrified this week in 1951.

Happy Birthday wishes this week to Brook Zern on Feb. 10. Nicki McHugh Miller will celebrate on Feb. 12 and shares the day with Leona White. Albert O.
