Beautiful sky, beautiful clouds, nice breeze, no humidity — now that is a beautiful thing.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Andrew Smith who celebrated his day July 27; Zachary Patnaude who celebrated July 28; Michael O’Brien, July 29; Coleman Hughes, July 31; Cassidy Kelleher and Nolan Murphy who celebrate their day today, August 1.

Happy anniversary wishes go out to Bill and Joan Connolly who celebrated their 60th on July 24. Congratulations, and here is to many more years together.

I talked to my old neighbor Mary Ellen Kresel, who is still happy in the Villages in Florida. She travels north to visit her kids and grandchildren, and she will be attending a wedding in New Hampshire this weekend. She will be glad to get back south.

Norma Bridwell called to tell me her son Tim is here from Europe with his family. They are very excited to have him home as he only gets here once a year.

While here, Tim is releasing a new book titled Sophornia L, which is a name he got from the old cemetery. He will be autographing his book at Edgartown Books on August 9 at 12:30 p.m.

The Sand Sculpture Contest will be August 9 at South Beach, right fork. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the construction will begin after you register. Judging will be at 2 p.m. and the awards will be handed out at 3 p.m. There are two categories — adult and juniors 12 years and under. Registration is $5. This is fun even if you don’t build a sculpture.

The annual All Island Art Show will be held on Monday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tabernacle at the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs. Come and support artists from all over the Island as they show and sell their work.

I don’t know if you have attended Tuesday’s Music on the Lawn at the library sponsored by the Friends of the Edgartown Library, but July was a hit and upcoming August 12 will be The Grateful Dread, and Johnny Hoy plays on August 19. A raffle for Robert Avakian’s black and white photo, Snowy Night on Main, will benefit the music program. Raffle tickets are $10 and are on sale at the library and every Tuesday evening. The drawing will be held on August 26.

This summer I have a young man, Scott Carter from England, living with me. He is working at the Candy Bazaar and he has fit right in. I gave him a little tour of the down-Island towns last week, and when I explained about up-Island he informed me he was off work on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and we could go up-Island then. I smiled and explained to him that although it was a good idea, that the timing would be a little busy as everyone was up there for the sunset. I told him I only made that trip once or twice a year and it would be during the day when I only had to fight the tour buses. Besides, who goes up-Island on Wednesday when Chilmark Chocolates opens on Thursday? So, we will do that on a weekend.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
