The Steamship Authority has announced several schedule changes Monday, including cancellations, because of repairs to the ferry Martha’s Vineyard.
The Martha’s Vineyard will be taken off the operating schedule Monday at 5 p.m. so repairs can be made to the bow door, Steamship Authority general manager Wayne Lamson said. He said there is a crack in the door's mechanism that requires welding, and the bow door is not being used.
"We're backing the vessel in and using it like a freight boat, where everything has to back in or turn around and face back out, so it's creating some operational challenges for us today with the loading and offloading," Mr. Lamson said.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the Martha's Vineyard will be out for repairs and replaced by the Katama.
As a result, the 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. trips to and from Oak Bluffs will be diverted to Vineyard Haven, and there will be limited passenger capacity on the 5 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven trips and the 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole trips.
The 9:30 p.m. Island Home trip from Vineyard Haven has been cancelled, Mr. Lamson said, because it will need to berth in Vineyard Haven for the night. Mr. Lamson said customers can instead travel on the 8:30 p.m. ferry from Vineyard Haven or a special 10:30 p.m. trip from Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole.
If all goes as planned, Mr. Lamson said, the Martha’s Vineyard is expected to be back in service and the normal operating schedule will resume at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
