Well, the weekend weather was cold and damp with a little thunder Sunday night. We received our first snowfall on Tuesday, with miserably cold temperatures to boot. The only vehicles on the road were sand trucks. It seems like the temperature has dropped nearly as fast as the price of gasoline. It was on sale for $2.99 a gallon at the up-Island gas station, the lowest it has been around here in nearly eight years and they were mighty busy. Tom Hodgson reports that he photographed the first snow drops in the front yard of the old Frank Wight house on Music street.
Sal Laterra of Providence, R.I., visited with Phyllis Meras at her Music street home last weekend. Sal did some chores for Phyllis and took her out to dinner. He went home on Monday.
Lynn Christoffers of Edgartown Road, nationally known photographer, returned home on last Sunday after spending the holidays with her sister in Newark, N.J. She reports having a wonderful time.
Nancy Cole said that her daughter Emily was home for the holidays and son Stuart is having a memorable time traveling in Europe.
Charlie Kernick and his wife Stevie of Edgartown Road returned home last week after a trip down to North Carolina to visit her family for Christmas. Cynthia Walsh also returned home last week after visiting her daughter Lawler for the holidays.
Marjorie Pierce reports that the First Congregational Church community suppers began last Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the parish house and will continue throughout the winter. Please use the Music street entrance and you may contact her through the church office at 508-693-2842. Also, Pam Butterrick reports that the Federated Church in Edgartown will resume serving free lasagna dinners from 12:30 to 2 p.m. every Sunday starting this week through the final Sunday in March.
Amy Hoff over at the library reports that Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. Benjamin Higgins will play more of his original piano compositions at the library. He played last week and has been summoned back by popular demand. Benjamin is a native and a graduate of Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. She says that once he picked up the guitar, he focused his energy and creativity into his own music. He devoted this past winter to writing songs for his first two albums.
Sarah Monast at ACE MV reports that award-winning photographer Mark Alan Lovewell will conduct a class for the beginning and novice photographer at the regional high school on Jan. 22.
History note: On Jan. 14, 1949 the members of the Grange presented a three act farce, The Campbells are Coming, before a large audience in the Tisbury School auditorium in Vineyard Haven. All parts were exceptionally well acted and were received with roars of enthusiasm by the audience. The Grangers who had parts in the play were Mary Smith, Marjorie Manter, Doreena King, David Engley, Albert Robinson, Fred and Donald Fisher, Alice Magnuson, James Alley and Virginia Rebello. The play was coached by Crichton Magee, and Elizabeth King and Pauline Magee were prompters. Laurus Sutton was in charge of stage props and lighting, Muriel Loud distributed the programs and Carol Drew was in charge of ticket sales. Costumes were assembled by Lillian Magnuson, assisted by Elizabeth Manter. Edna Robinson collected the proceeds from the homemade candy that was sold between acts by Ann Coleman and Jane Austin.
