Members of the Lagoon Pond Association will gather this weekend to talk about critical issues facing the saltwater pond.

The LPA is a non-profit association founded in 1989 that advocates for the health of Lagoon Pond. Years ago, eel grass in the thriving pond provided shelter for shellfish. According to the organization, some areas in the pond are now in critical condition, with most of the eel grass gone and shellfish habitat in decline because of algae growth from nitrogen that enters the lagoon from various sources.

To voice concerns or become part of the solution, attend the LPA’s annual meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 at the Featherstone Center for the Arts on Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs. There will be updates from Oak Bluffs and Tisbury town officials and discussions about septic issues, zoning restrictions, new construction, shellfishing, and boating. Those interested can also join the LPA online at lagoonpondassoc.org/membership. Membership is $30 a year and tax-deductible.
