Well, throw a little salt over your left shoulder for good luck before reading this week’s column. As you may have noticed the deer have been moving around lately, primarily due to the hunting season, and you are apt to see them in strange places or crossing the road. The archery season for deer ends real soon. The cemetery received new flags in time for Veterans Day. The days are growing shorter as the sun is setting before 4:20 p.m. My, how time flies; about one month from today we will be well into the Christmas season.

Anna Alley returned home Monday night after attending to business appointments and stopping by to spend the weekend with grandsons Robbie and Henry and their parents. She took them to the zoo in Providence on Sunday and Henry particularly liked the elephants.

Paul Karasik reminds everyone that Johnny Hoy and the Dock Dance Band will be performing Friday night at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs. It is a fundraiser for the charter school.

Dr. Jay Segel and his wife Celine of Pond Road returned home Thursday after a business and pleasure trip to France.

Marian Irving of Old County Road celebrated her birthday last weekend with dinner, flowers, cards, and gifts from family and friends. Son in law Mike arrived with wood and tools and surprised her by attending to some house repairs, while her daughter Susan raked leaves and her grandchildren all called in their good wishes.

Marian reports that Christmas Faire planning is underway at the church, so circle your calendars for Saturday, Dec. 5 between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Custom orders for either evergreen or boxwood wreaths will be accepted through Wednesday, Dec. 2 by calling the church office. at 508-693-2842. Food you can freeze for the holidays will be featured, as well as vintage jewelry. It is wise to arrive early and plan to stay for lunch!

David McCullough receives an award in Newport, R.I. Thursday night and Friday night will be speaking at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Even though he has not been around town much he sure seems to keep busy.

Please make arrangements to attend the special town meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the school gym. You will be presented with an eight-article warrant to act on. The quorum call is 125 and town officials hope you will attend.

Amy Hoff, over at the library, reports that Saturday from 2:30 till 4:30 p.m. the library will be hosting its Lego Club for all ages. Various sizes will be provided to fit various age groups. Come with a friend or meet friends at the library!

On Sunday from 3:30 till 4:30 p.m. they will host the annual Community Poetry Reading featuring community members reading their own poems and/or the poems of others. Help keep the tradition alive by attending as a reader or a listener or both! Also come meet West Tisbury’s new poet laureate, Emma Young. As always, numbers will be drawn from a hat to determine the reading order.

On Wednesday Tweed’s Reads Reading Group will meet at 10 a.m. This month the group will discuss the philosophy of hunting and read Meditations on Hunting by Jose Ortega Gasset. The book is available for check-out at the front desk at the library. Tweed Roosevelt is leading a 14-session reading group focused on overlooked gems that meets the third Wednesday of each month.
