Post-season play for winter sports at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School came to an end on Saturday as the girls basketball team lost to Fontbonne 43 to 46 in the quarterfinals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association’s division three south sectionals.

Seeded sixth, the Vineyarders faced third-seeded Fontbonne at Eastern Nazarene college in Quincy. It was the first time the Vineyard faced the Fontbonne team this year. Earlier in the week they beat Carver 54-41 in the first round of sectionals. Fontbonne faced Bishop Stang in the first round, winning 55-34. They had a 16-4 season record.

“We had a trouble getting our offense going,” said Coach Maureen Hill.

At the half, they were down 18-25. With three minutes remaining in the game, the team came with in one point of Fontbonne, the closest they got to unseating their opponent.

Junior cocaptain Erin Hill scored 19 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, Molly deBettencourt scored 14 points and Whitney Schroeder scored 6 points, with 5 rebounds and 6 steals. Coach Hill added that by the end of the first period Erin had out-rebounded the entire Fontbonne team.

Overall, the team met her expectations this season Coach Hill said.

“Going in [to this season] I wanted to challenge the girls with more competitive games. They really rose to the challenge.”

Several of the teams the Vineyarders played against and beat are still in the tournament, Coach Hill said.

“It’s a testament to these kids,” she said.

The girls team had a stellar year, winning 14 out of 20 games during the season. And earlier in the season, junior cocaptain Erin Hill passed the 1,000 point mark for her high school basketball career.
