In an annual Memorial Day tradition, students in Chilmark, Tisbury and Edgartown will carry flowers to the sea on Friday, May 27 to commemorate Memorial Day.
Chilmark students will leave the school at 9 a.m. and head to Menemsha, where the group will gather by the Coast Guard dock. Members of the Coast Guard will speak.
The Tisbury school’s march to the sea parade will kick off from the school at 12:30 p.m. and parade through town to Owen Park, where they will throw flowers in the harbor. The Tisbury school band will play and flags will be waving.
In Edgartown students will leave the school at 1 p.m. and march to Memorial Wharf, with a stop at the war monuments outside the courthouse. Lieut. Col. Ted Morgan, a World War II veteran, will speak, Mark Lovewell will sing maritime songs, the Eagle band will perform, and students will recite poetry. The eighth grade class will read the Gettysburg Address.
In case of inclement weather, ceremonies will take place in the school gymnasiums.
