There has been a damp chill in the air all week. Temperatures in the 40s most days but reaching 60 earlier in the week. Winds continue to howl and the rain has been around for most of the week.

For the third winter in a row, there will not be a full commercial scalloping season. A few families are going out to get their family limits and that will probably not last long. Scallops at the fish markets are ranging from $27 to $35 per pound — quite a delicacy.

As of Friday afternoon, the first week of shotgun deer season, there had only been 20 deer weighed in at the tribal weigh-in station. A rather slow deer season. During archery season only about nine were weighed in and during black powder season on tribal lands there were only about seven deer. They must be hiding deep within the woods during the daylight hours.

On Sunday afternoon I checked in with Al Johnson of J-Way dredging company. He noted that everything is going well. It was the first time I actually observed the dredged material shooting through the pipes and on to Lobsterville Beach. Not sure how many cubic yards per hour but it was running smoothly.

Join in the fun at the Aquinnah Public Library this week. On Saturday, Dec. 10 story time is at 10:30 a.m. and from 11 to 3 is kids craft: collage of winter patterns. On Tuesday, Dec. 13 the after-school club meets. On Saturday, Dec. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. is the library’s holiday party! Holiday crafts, fun food, and an overall good time!

Chilmark Community Church will be hosting their annual holiday bazaar at the Chilmark Community Center on Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Luncheon will be available, including lobster rolls and chowder.

Tired of listening to everyone else singing? Then join in a free carol sing at the Federated Church on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 2 to 3 p.m., as part of the Christmas in Edgartown festivities. Come and sing with members of the choir as they sing beloved Christmas songs. Peter R. Boak will play the piano. Cookies and cider follow the singing. Peter Temple reminds everyone that the third and final housing production meeting is Monday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, with a free dinner at 6:30. There will be a review of the draft vision statement and goals from previous meetings, a look at maps of town land and discussion of specific strategies for various lots or areas (e.g. allowing smaller lots on State Road near town hall to help create a town center). The West Tisbury Library Foundation will hold a silent auction and raffle to benefit the library from Dec. 5 until Dec. 19. Proceeds will support programming at the library. Items will be on display and may be bid on at the library from Dec. 5 until Dec. 19. Winners will be announced at the library’s holiday party on Dec. 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Stop by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Huntington Library for the annual jewelry jingle sale, part of Christmas in Edgartown festivities. Shop tables full of gently used and unwanted jewelry. Members, shop in the museum gift shop and receive 20 per cent off your total purchase; non-members get 10 per cent off.

Kristina Kestenbaum Leslie enjoyed a Kestenbaum gathering over the holiday with family members from all over meeting in Sandwich for a reunion.
