The National Weather Service is looking for volunteer weather observers on the Vineyard to serve with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network.

The CoCoRaHS is a nonprofit citizen science network with volunteers in all 50 states that measure and map precipitation. Data is used by researchers, planners, officials and the National Weather Service. Requirements include enthusiasm for watching and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn more. According to a press release there are 10 observers on the Island but more are needed.

To sign up visit cocorahs.org, register, complete the online training, and start reporting through a computer or phone app. Plastic rain gauges can be obtained through the website for about $30 plus shipping.

The CoCoRaHS Cup will go to the state that recruits the most new volunteers during March. Last year’s winning state was Arizona.
