Edgartown summer resident and author James B. Conroy is one of two recipients of the 2017 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.

Mr. Conroy is the author of Lincoln’s White House: The People’s House in Wartime. The book was largely written on the Vineyard and looks at the residents, staff, security and daily life at the Civil War White House.

The Lincoln Prize is awarded annually to the best scholarly work about President Lincoln, the American Civil War, or a Civil War soldier. This year’s co-recipient is Douglas R. Egerton for Thunder at the Gates: The Black Civil War Regiments That Redeemed America.

The winners will split a $50,000 prize and each will receive a bronze replica of Augustus Saint-Gauden’s life-sized bust Lincoln the Man. They will be honored April 19 at an event hosted by Gettysburg College and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History at the Union League Club in New York city.
