I.M. Pei, the famous architect of great buildings all over the world, will turn 100 on April 26.
At a much younger age, he and his wife were guests a few times at the Colonial Inn, a hotel built by my grandparents in 1911. I remember my parents, Katherine and Tommy Chirgwin, enjoyed many conversations with them, an interesting and delightful couple.
They later brought their children to the Vineyard, who still have fond memories. The Peis’ daughter and her family spent five summers at the Chirgwin/Fligor Apartments beginning in 2002. She and her son visited with us last summer and fell in love with the Vineyard all over again.
The Javits Center, designed by I.M. Pei, is a trade show building in New York city where I and many of The Fligors’ staff walked many a mile over many years.
Happy 100th birthday, Mr. Pei, and best wishes.
Carol and Dick Fligor live in Edgartown.
