My grandsons made it to the Island last week. It was a whirlwind vacation with their parents. Corbyn Clark-Garza is now a tall 13 years old. His brother, Dominic, is 10 years old. They visited with many friends and relatives on-Island. Chris and Lilly drove Dominic back to Rockford, Ill. Corbyn is staying on-Island, waiting for his sailing expedition on the Shenandoah next week. I clearly remember the day I drove his father to the Shenandoah for his sixth grade trip. It was startling to hear last weekend that the Alabama ran aground near Mystic, Conn. That trip was also filled with young people ready to learn how to sail. No one was injured. The children were safely transported to hotels and their parents were informed. A very different kind of sailing trip.
The long-awaited Grace Church lobster rolls will be available every Friday night beginning on June 30. You may not remember, but the kitchen at the Parish Hall had a flood in October. Repair work has slowed the progress of our lobster roll program. Pat Waring assures me that June 30 is the opening date. A big thank you goes out to Lorraine Clark who ran this popular program for so many years. Lorraine has now retired from working there, but I can bet she will always be a presence. You may order for pickup in advance at 508-693-0332. This is always a sign of the season starting.
The Tisbury Street Fair is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on July 8. Family fun, vendors, food, games, raffles. Whenever this date comes up I think of it as Cora Medeiros’s birthday party. What a lovely lady who did so much for our town.
I don’t think you would expect to find authentic Ethiopian food on-Island, but think again. Sunday, June 25 will be an Ethiopian feast at our Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. Our fundraiser will feature beer, wine, live music, and a short film. We are working in support of Awra Amba and efforts to install solar-powered water systems. Call 508-687-9199 for tickets and information.
The wonders of technology have brought me back in contact with one of my very favorite people. Pete Sawyer — you remember him from WMVY — will be visiting family in western Massachusetts, then his old gang here on the rock. Pete now teaches English in Taiwan, so this will be quite a trek for him. Look for him mid-July. I hear he will drive from San Francisco to Massachusetts. We can’t wait.
Roberta Kirn has traveled and studied all winter with her shared song project. Roberta firmly believes in her mission to encourage every day people to share songs and sing in their communities. She will present her program on Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. Come listen to this enthusiastic musician. The program is free.
The library will host Jonathan White on Thursday, June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. Jonathan’s topic is Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean. And that’s why we all live here, correct?
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the delightful Mitzi Beach. May she rest in peace.
Anniversary bouquets go out to Alan and Michele Berman on June 24. Len and Georgia Morris observe many years of wedded bliss on June 27.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Byron Kennedy and Charley Wulsheger on June 23; June 24 is a party for Frank T. Bailey, Vanessa Williams, and Hamilton Walker; June 25 shines on Carly Simon, Ashley A. Byrd, Suzanne Webb, Jack O’Callaghan and Eva Lemoine; June 26 is for Eileen Whiting and Charlie Mead; June 27 honors Lance Pachico and Michael Wilson; and on June 29 John Doyle, Flavia Stanley and Alexander Douglas Grant take the cake. Many happy returns.
