Jane update: She is grumbling and wincing through her rehab exercises like a real champ.

With gray skies and fog that felt like an ever-present weight on our shoulders it seemed as if summer was never going to reveal itself. All of a sudden, the clouds have made way for warm breezes and fiery sunsets.

Warm breezes have blown in a lot of friends and summertime neighbors.

Arne and Helen deKeijzer are in from Weston, Conn. enjoying their Larsen Lane home. It is always a pleasure to exchange a few words when I see them out for a Basin Road stroll.

Jill and Ted Bernhard, along with their three girls, enjoyed family time at their Carroll Lane home. Mom and dad managed an early morning coffee date on Squid Row.

Eva Stanley, teen daughter of Chris and Malia (Scott) has fully immersed herself in a Spanish language academy at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt. The academy is based on Middlebury College’s longstanding tradition of immersion education and provides a world of difference when it comes to language learning. Eva is so immersed that her primary method of communication to the outside world is via snail mail. Meanwhile, Malia is back on South Road with sons Theo and Quinn. You can find upcoming high school freshman Theo working his first job at the Texaco. Quinn will, as always, be living the dream frolicking with cousins around town and at the beach.

Judy Jardin has been in town from Lewes, Del. for short visit prior to the sale of her Ocean View Farm home. She enjoyed visits with friends and family and hopes to come back for the closing in mid July. Residing in Lewes puts her steps away from granddaughters Samanatha, Celina and Brianna, daughter Roxanne and her husband Mark Sordi. Judy also sees granddaughter Ruthie and Isobel, daughter Jackie and her husband Bo Hornbuckle more frequently as well since Lewes puts her much closer to their home in Maryland. As an aside, let’s all send well wishes and healing thoughts to Ruthie, who suffered a severe ankle break.

Tory (Shanok), Will, Emma, Kate and Will Dolan have ventured to town from their Hingham home. Emma recently graduated from high school and will embrace the Fairfield University campus this fall. Will completed his elementary education and is ready to take on the challenges of high school.

Although strikingly beautiful, Portuguese man-of-war, unwanted visitors, have been spotted along the south-facing shores. Oftentimes referred to as jellyfish, these animals are actually a colony of organisms working together and pack quite a punch with their venom, so steer clear.

Ellie Greenberg, daughter of Marcy and Joel and a sophomore at Middlebury College, recently departed for the 2017 World Maccabiah Games. Ellie will once again lace up her cleats representing Team USA as a highly qualified soccer player. The games, held every four years in Israel, this time from July 4 to 18, facilitate a worldwide gathering of young Jewish athletes from more than 60 countries. Ellie participated in the 2013 games where her team won the gold. According to her Chilmark neighbor Andy Goldman, the team is hopeful again this year. Ellie will resume work at the Chilmark Store upon her return with remarkable stories to share.

In more world travel news, Landon Steere, eldest grandson of Heather Sommers and Ed Sussman, has set off with 30 fellow Peace Corps volunteers to Guinea, West Africa. Landon will spend two years teaching high school students. He reports that he is traveling light in comparison to the other volunteers. Prior to departure he was refining his list of necessities like a headlamp, solar charger, water filters and more. I am hopeful we will receive periodic updates from Landon.

Jeremy and son Leo Sussman arrived on July 5 for summertime fun with cousins including siblings of Landon: Rowan, Nevia, June and Emmett.

Other exciting news from this family includes Heather’s announcement. Tuesdays beginning July 11 she will open her studio to the public. A sculptor in clay and bronze and a painter, Heather has a ceramic studio and an all purpose multimedia space, as well as a sculpture garden. Visit her between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 76 State Road. In addition to the excitement of Conrad Neumann’s newly published Up-Island Poems, Tales of a Life on Island and Sea, he and Jane celebrate their 55th anniversary on July 7. It is presumed their milestone will be celebrated over lobster rolls at the Galley.

Monina von Opel and Edward Miller hosted a dinner for all the folks who participated in last week’s fourth annual Vineyard Herreshoff Cup Regatta on Menemsha Pond. Although competition was fierce between Edgartown Yacht Club and the Menemsha Pond Races the event provided a memorable bonding experience for the rivals. The Menemsha Pond Racers retained the Cup.

Mariah, skippered by Ken Iscol and Nick Karnovsky, came in first; Southward, skippered by Charlie Shipway with Dick Bluestein as crew were second; and Crow Dancer, skippered by Edward Miller and Dan Karnovsky in third, but a whisker ahead of Pippen, skippered by Robert Soros with Scotty DiBiaso as crew.

Although saddened to lose exceptional preschool director Heather Quinn Lionette, the Chilmark Preschool is pleased to share they have hired Ursula Costin. Ursula has a master’s in early childhood education from Bank Street College of Education, and completed a doctoral program in school psychology from NYU. She seems like a perfect choice to follow in the footsteps of both Heather and Chris Abrams, who was director when the preschool opened its doors.

Folks at the Chilmark library would like to share a correction. The hours printed in this years CCC brochure are incorrect. You will find the library open Mondays 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed on Sundays.
