Sunny days have prevailed for the past week except for a torrential downpour on Friday. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s, with a lot of humidity and a little fog now and then. Everything is green.

The annual Portuguese Feast will be held this weekend at the Holy Ghost Society on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs, opening on Friday evening at 5 p.m. A great time for the family to enjoy food, games, and an auction. And don’t forget the parade from the Oak Bluffs Steamship wharf to the PA Club on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. to honor Queen Isabella and her benevolence to her country.

Summer fun at the Aquinnah Public Library includes kids craft on Saturday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., making Mexican mirrors. At noon a member of the Sharks baseball team will visit in uniform to read books at story time. At 1 p.m. there will be a celebration of Thoreau: a short nature walk and a reading of some of Thoreau’s writing, with water and snacks provided. At 7 p.m. kids get in free to a Sharks baseball game with their library card. Tickets are available in limited amounts at the library. On Tuesday, it is music on the deck with young adults performing from Alex’s Place.

The sixth annual Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Connect to End Violence seawall event will be held on July 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven seawall. Aquinnah tribal ranger Michael Sellitti Jr. invites men to get involved in ending domestic violence and gender-based violence on Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. This year the seawall event is being promoted by the newly-formed men’s group M.O.V.E., Men Opposed to Violence on Everyone. It is his hope that Aquinnah tribal men will get involved and show how important women are. Michael is a M.O.V.E. member as well as an Aquinnah tribal and community member.

At the Aquinnah Cultural Center this week there will be house tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Coming up, July 22 is the 11th annual Native American Artisans’ Festival held in Aquinnah Circle. For more information call 508-645-7900 or email aquinnahcc@gmail.com.

On Sunday, July 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. the Sarget Gallery will host a reception and artist’s talk for Force of Place: Oil and Water in North Dakota, a multi-media show of projections and 35 mm film photographs by artist Valery Lyman. She spent summers growing up on Martha’s Vineyard and for the last four years has photographed and recorded audio in the Bakken region of North Dakota. The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and welcomes appointments. Call 508-645-2776.

Tom Dresser will give a book talk at the Aquinnah town hall on Thursday, July 20 at 5 p.m. The topic is his new book, Hidden History of Martha’s Vineyard, a collection of little-known historical facts covering a variety of Vineyard topics. A special section is devoted to the Underground Railroad, and another part investigates significant shipwrecks off the shores of the Vineyard.

Kathryn Brill returned to her home in Naples, Fla. on Wednesday following her annual visit with her college roommate Wendy Nierenberg and her family in West Tisbury. Kathi is the sister of John Brill, my former Pleasantville, N.Y. classmate in the ‘50s. Over the winter, Kathi and I researched and located many of her classmates in time for their recent 50th reunion from Pleasantville High School. Of course John and I enjoyed our 50th PHS reunion in 2014.

Lily Duetsch is spending the summer with her aunt and uncle Chris Duetsch Katilus and George Katilus, and her cousin, George Katilus 4th. This is Lily’s first summer on the Vineyard and she is working at Cliffhangers. This week she is off to her college orientation in New Jersey.

Colin Katilus passed his Deck Watch Officers exam on the first try with a 94 per cent. He is presently in the running for small boat station as a seaman which is an E-3. But upon graduation from A school he will advance to a E-4 and become a boatswain’s mate third class. He looks forward to his next visit home to Aquinnah.

U.S. Navy AME2 (AW) Christopher Manning returned to his home base in Lemoore, Calif. following a 10-day leave with his family in Aquinnah. The Tiger cruise for families from Hawaii to California would have been a fun family time except for the fact that Chris flew back to Lemoore. His longest time at sea was for 75 straight days. He has received quite a few medals, following in the footsteps of his ancestors. Upon his discharge in January 2018, it is anticipated that he will be part of the United States Navy Reserves, stationed in Newport, R.I. where his great-uncle Gregory Noble served during the Korean War.

Over at USCG Station Menemsha, Joseph Belladue has returned from a cruise with his family. It was nice to finally meet four-month-old Landon Tyler Struyk, son of Adam and Elizabeth Struyk.

Condolences to the family and friends of Al Hopp, who so generously gave of his time and talents during his many years on the Vineyard.

Condolences to the family and friends of former Aquinnah resident Reverend Thomas O’Quinn, who passed away on July 6 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Tom and his daughters Anna and April resided in the Cook house.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of my sister in law Patricia Rose, who passed away in Florida a week ago. Services will be held on the Vineyard.

Happy 50th anniversary to Bob Iadicicco and his bride Connie Frank on July 20.
