The Martha’s Vineyard Mediation Program and the Edgartown library will co-sponsor a program next week that looks at addressing potential family conflict over vacation properties.
The program takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Edgartown library. Panelists Jack Wofford and Martin V. Tomassian, who are both attorneys and mediators, will provide advice about how families can plan ahead to avoid or minimize conflict about vacation home ownership. While the first generation often deals with maintenance and improvements and pays the bills, those issues can become complex problems among future generations. The panelists will look at vacation property issues including conflict values, disparity of wealth, and historical baggage, and talk about how to handle things like buy-out requests, divorces and disagreements.
The panelists will also look at how to plan ahead to avoid destructive conflict and possible litigation. There will also be an open discussion period and audience will have a chance to present issues.
