My classmates and I graduated from the Tisbury High School in the class on 1953. Our school was not new then. Now 65 years later, the methods of teaching, and expectations of the public have drastically changed the kind and amount of space needed.
Many of us walked home for lunch, so the lunchroom was small. Now all students eat lunch at school, but must do so in 13 minutes.
There was no understanding of learning disabilities, so some fellow classmates simply marked time until they could legally leave school.
There were no students with physical disabilities, as there was no accommodation for them.
The classrooms were arranged with student desks in neat rows, the teacher in front between a desk and blackboard. Collaborative learning and project based learning now require more flexible architecture.
Computers, so vital to the 20th century, were not dreamed of. Ballpoint pens were new and we had inkwells in our desks. Computers require space for keyboards and monitors, as well as complex wiring for which our current school is inadequate.
The preparation for this new school design has been extensive and competent. Many meetings, hearings, viewings etc. have been held during which all our concerns were heard considered.
Our wonderful teachers, administration and staff need a new school now. This is a good plan. Our children, our teachers and our town deserve it. I urge you to vote yes on April 24.
