Writing about an ordinary day of Leopold Bloom, June 16, 1904, James Joyce created an extraordinary book. Ulysses, for many, is the book to which they return again and again. The Vineyard is no stranger to this Joycean gravitational pull. In fact, for the past 40 years the organization Arts and Society has staged Bloomsday, on June 16 each year, to remember James Joyce and all of his creations.

Consider it a day to throw reason and scheduling aside in favor of creativity and the magic of words and wordplay. The event takes place on Saturday at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven, beginning at 8 p.m. Its originator and organizer is John Crelan.

Niki Patton will perform nursery rhymes from Ulysses, Gerry Yukevich will perform from The Dead, the novella length short story featured in Dubliners, Molly Conole and Jim Thomas will perfrom songs from The Dead and Ulysses with accompaniment by pianist and music director Philip Dietterich.

Pam Schnatterly returns as Molly from Ulysses, and there will even be a world premiere by Brian Hughes from Anna Livia Plurabelle in Finnegan’s Wake.

Tickets are $25 at the door. For information call 508 696-0539.
