On Saturday night, a thin crescent moon appears close to the horizon after sunset. Take a look and you may see the planet Mercury nearby. Mercury is just underneath the moon. The two are a pretty sight that is fleeting, short term. In only a few minutes the two set. The best views will be anywhere along the Vineyard’s north shore, from the Gay Head cliffs to the West Chop overlook. An unobstructed view is essential to enjoying this short duration event.
Look again on Sunday night and the moon has advanced along the zodiac. It is higher and appears near Venus, the brightest planet in the night sky.
The two are high enough in the western sky to be enjoyed for a while. The moon’s lower cusp almost touches Venus.
