Three people were injured, one critically on Thursday night when a Vineyard Transit Authority bus struck two pedestrians near the Church Street bus stop in Edgartown.
Edgartown fire chief Alex Schaeffer said his department and EMS were called to the scene at about 10:20 p.m. Medics immediately called for additional medical help from all Island EMS agencies.
Edgartown police and Massachusetts state police also responded.
According to Chief Schaeffer, medics treated two people who where struck by the bus; one was critically injured. Edgartown EMS transported both to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. A third person who was a passenger on the bus was also injured. That person was transported to the hospital by Oak Bluffs EMS.
No names have been released because the accident is still under investigation, police said.
One of the pedestrians and the bus passenger have been released from the hospital, Edgartown police chief Bruce McNamee said Friday morning. Chief McNamee said the critically injured pedestrian had been transported to Boston for medical care.
A state police accident reconstruction team was on its way to the Island Friday morning to assist in the investigation.
“I want a fresh set of eyes to take a look at it,” Chief McNamee said. “We did thoroughly investigate it. We’ve got video from on board we’re taking a look at.”
Chief McNamee said the accident occurred just after the bus driver turned from Main street on to Church street. The preliminary investigation shows the driver was traveling at a low rate of speed, police said.
U.S. Department of Transportation regulations require the bus driver be tested for drugs or alcohol.
Chief McNamee said a breathalyzer test administered to the driver Thursday evening was negative, and the results of a urine test will not be known for several days.
