With their season on the line Sunday afternoon, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks beat the Worcester Bravehearts 4-2 to force a game three in the Future’s League world series. The game begins at 6 p.m. tonight at the Vineyard home field as the team looks to capture its first FCBL title since 2013.
The Sunday game at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester was rescheduled from Saturday due to torrential rain and thunderstorms. The rainout proved advantageous for the Sharks as they could rest many of their best bullpen pitchers who had a workout in the three-game semifinal match against the Brockton Rox.
On Sunday, the Sharks started Brian Ketchie from Catawba College but pulled him after two innings for middle-reliever Devon Dimascio. Dimascio, who had a sparkling 1.55 earned run average in the regular season, held the hard-hitting Bravehearts to one run over five innings of work. They were the first runs Worcester had scored off Dimascio all season, and the first Dimascio had given up since July 2.
At the plate, the Sharks got off to a quick start with a three-run first inning. Tyler Wincig from Bucknell reached on an infield hit, DH Matt Oldham walked, and third baseman Jackson Raper doubled down the left field line to make it 1-0. Catcher Nick Raposo from Wheaton College then singled to drive in two more runs, giving the Sharks a 3-0 lead. They added a fourth run in the third inning on a Tate Kolwyck single to left, and cruised to victory from there behind Dimascio’s dominance on the mound.
Now the Sharks need one more win to call themselves champions.
