An Oak Bluffs ambulance crew did double duty as a first responder at the scene of an accident Tuesday morning on the highway near Wareham.

Fire chief John Rose said the crew was on its way back to the Vineyard after a transport to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston when a car spun out on Route 25 near the Wareham exit and hit a guard rail. Weather conditions were poor with heavy rain and wind.

Mr. Rose said paramedic Mike Salvator and EMT Tad Medeiros witnessed the accident and activated the ambulance’s emergency lights before stopping to assess the scene and check with the sole occupant for injuries.

He said the pair called off-Island dispatch and administered patient care until the Wareham EMS arrived on the scene. The Onset fire department and Massachusetts State Police also responded.

Chief Rose said the accident occurred at around noon; at about 12.30 p.m. the ambulance crew left the scene and headed for the ferry home.

“I feel very proud of them,” the fire chief said. “They witnessed something outside of their district, stopped and did the right thing. They stabilized the situation and the scene.”
