A thin crescent moon appears low in the southwestern sky tomorrow night. The moon is only one-day old and thus a challenge to see low in the sky. If the sky is clear and you have an unobscured view of the moon, take another look.
The ringed-planet Saturn is nearby. Saturn is the brightest “star-like” object in the vicinity of the moon. Both are in the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius.
Say goodbye to both Saturn and Sagittarius. They spent the summer with us and both in the weeks ahead are about to become obscured by the bright setting sun.
The crescent moon will be easier to find in the week ahead, as it is higher in the sky. The moon moves through the zodiacal constellations Aquarius and Capricornus.
The best meteor shower of the year will take place on Thursday night. Stand outside late in the evening and you could see quite a number of meteors shooting across the sky. The Geminids is more productive than the most popular Perseids Meteor Shower in August. Fewer folks venture outside in December, which explains why the August shower is a favorite. You could see as many as a meteor a minute, but we think that forecast creates disappointment. We think it is better just to go out and enjoy what you can see. The highest numbers will be before dawn on Friday morning.
