Ariel Camp Hodgson, 89, Was Active as Volunteer

Ariel (Camp) Hodgson of West Falmouth died on Sunday, July 13, at the Royal Megansett Nursing and Retirement Home in North Falmouth. Mrs. Hodgson was 89.

She was the beloved wife for 42 years of Sloat Fassett Hodgson of West Falmouth.

Mrs. Hodgson was born in Wakefield on Oct. 23, 1913, the daughter of Arthur Dutton Camp and Dorothy Bingham Camp. Her twin brother, Richard Curtis Camp, predeceased her. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

Prior to living in West Falmouth, Mrs. Hodgson lived in Peekskill, N.Y., from 1933 to 1960, where she raised her two sons. She was an active community member in Peekskill, serving as member and chairman of the recreation commission, president of the women's club, member of the YWCA board of directors, and co-chairman and staff assistant for the local chapter of the Junior Red Cross. During World War II, Mrs. Hodgson was an active volunteer for the Office of Price Administration (OPA) in the city.

While living in West Falmouth, Mrs. Hodgson logged 3,000 hours serving as a volunteer at Falmouth Hospital. She was an avid fisherman, having been introduced to the sport by her brother in law, Fred Hodgson. She was noted for supplying her family throughout the years with bluefish and scallops.

She was an active member of the Chapoquoit Yacht Club, loved sailing with her husband and enjoyed competing for the numerous trophies that she won sailing in races organized for the women of the yacht club. She truly loved her life in West Falmouth and the opportunity it gave her to sail, fish, and enjoy the outdoors.

In addition to her husband, Sloat Fassett Hodgson, she leaves two sons, Tory Bingham Horton of Harper Woods, Mich.; David Camp Horton of Lexington; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; stepson Thomas Sloat Hodgson of West Tisbury; stepdaughter Michele Hodgson of Durham, N.C.; five step-grandchildren; her sister in law, Florence Daly Camp of Cincinnati, Ohio, and nephew Curtis Daly Camp of Cincinnati and his family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Homes of Falmouth. Interment and a memorial service will occur at a later date, following cremation.
