Jean K. Zaiko Burt Was Former Golf Champion
Jean K. Zaiko Burt of Oak Bluffs died on Friday, July 18, at her home. She was the beloved wife of Charles G. Burt. Born in New Britain, she lived in New Britain and Newington most of her life and spent summers on Martha's Vineyard for many years, moving here permanently seven years ago.
Jean was among the first women's professional basketball players and played with Babe Didrikson in the 1930s. She was runner-up in the Connecticut State Amateur Ladies Golf Championship and was a longtime member at Indian Hill Country Club, Newington, where she won the Ladies Club Championship in 1957, 1960 and 1963. Jean was a partner in the Damien Real Estate Co., Newington for many years.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Calvin C. Zaiko and Pamela of Oak Bluffs, and her grandson Justin Zaiko. She was predeceased by her first husband, Theodore Zaiko, in 1971.
Her funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, from Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair avenue, Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., at Newington Memorial. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard, P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Local arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
