Bernice Strock Sugarman Loved Gardening and Art
Bernice Strock Sugarman died in her sleep on Wednesday, August 20. She was the widow of Dr. Moses Strock, who in 1955 opened his dental practice with his brother Dr. Alvin Strock at 93 Main street, Vineyard Haven. She was 86 years old.
During the 50 years that she was a visitor to the Vineyard, she stayed primarily at the Main street house and at the houses that the family acquired at Farm Neck. Marcus Strock continues to reside in one of the original Farm Neck houses. Neil Strock lives with his family in Lafayette, Calif., and is an occasional visitor to the Island.
Bernice Strock Sugarman was raised in Thompsonville, Connecticut. She attended Wellesley College, Boston University and the Sorbonne, and she taught French and Spanish after receiving her degree. She had many interests, including a life-long passion for foreign travel, gardening, music and art. However, most of her time and energy was devoted to caring for and supporting her family. In her final years she resided in Wellesley and continued to visit the Vineyard whenever she could.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Peter Strock, Marcus Strock and Neil Strock, eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Dr. Peter Strock has continued to conduct the dental practice.
Interment was on Sunday, August 24, at the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Cemetery. A contribution may be made to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund c/o the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center, P. O. Box 692, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
