Sarah Viera, Age 98, Was Native of Azores Islands

Sarah Viera of State Road in Tisbury died Thursday morning, March 18, peacefully at her home. She was 98.

She was born in Brittania, San Miguel, Azores on August 4, 1905 and was raised in Dartmouth with her parents, Augustus and Amelia (Pimental) Arruda. She was married to Manuel C. Viera and during the Depression of the 1930s they moved to Martha's Vineyard for a working opportunity.

Mrs. Viera was a familiar face as a sales clerk with Vineyard Dry Goods and a parishioner of St. Augustine's Church, Vineyard Haven.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen V. Gelotte of Vineyard Haven and Mary D. Viera of Boston; three grandchildren, Mark Gelotte and his wife, Susan, of Hatfield, Sarah Peters and her husband, John, of Vineyard Haven and Matthew Gelotte and his wife, Elizabeth, of Wellesley, and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Anna, Leigh and Nicholas Gelotte.

Her service will be held in the chapel of St. John's Cemetery, Allen street, New Bedford at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 20. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Augustine's Church, P.O. Box 1565, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557 or to Meals on Wheels, Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, 68 Rt. 134, So. Dennis, MA 02660. Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
