Eva Palmeira, 101, Was Accomplished Homemaker

Eva Palmeira of West Tisbury died on Sept. 29 at the Henrietta Brewer House in Vineyard Haven. Eva was born on May 26, 1903 in Northbridge, to Peter and Mary Blanchette Manville.

She married John Palmeira in New Bedford in 1922 and in 1927 they came to live on Martha's Vineyard. For many years Eva and John were in the employ of Francis Foster and lived with him at his lovely Lambert's Cove estate, the main house of which is now the known as the Lambert's Cove Inn. In 1964 they moved to their new home at Longview. John Palmeira served as Sheriff of Dukes County from 1961 until 1971.

Eva was an accomplished homemaker who loved to cook, sew, entertain, and in all ways to maintain her home and gardens. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Vineyard Haven, Order of the Eastern Star Oriental Chapter No. 73, the Order of Pocahontas and the West Tisbury Grange. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John, and their only child, Doris Langshaw. She is survived by her nieces, Lucy Anthony and Lillian Blanchette, both of Connecticut and Lena Souza of New Bedford and her many grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.

A graveside service was held at Lambert's Cove Cemetery on Oct. 2. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Friends of the Up-Island Council on Aging, PO Box 3174, West Tisbury, MA 02575.
