Marguerite B. Macy, 84, Was Lifelong Educator

Marguerite B. (Bonsall) Macy of Galveston, Tex., died Feb. 5 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, Tex. She was 84.

Marguerite was born in Bayonne, N.J., on Nov. 28, 1921, one of six children born to Robert and Ada (Hoffman) Bonsall. She was raised in Westfield, N.J., and was graduated from Westfield High School.

She and her husband, Philip A. Macy Jr., were wed in 1942 and enjoyed more than 63 years of marriage. They moved extensively throughout their lives, making their home in cities and towns across the country and vacationing in others. They lived in Decatur, Ill., Louisville, Mo., Wood River, Ill., and a few cities in Texas including Houston and Galveston.

Marguerite received her teaching certificate from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Campus in 1965 and taught in numerous schools, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Texas Teachers Association.

She enjoyed sewing and needlepoint along with traveling, shopping and long walks on the beaches. She also had a passion for friendly competition in duplicate bridge playing. Philip was born on Martha's Vineyard and for a long time after moving off the Island returned to visit and vacation. In 1951 they bought a cottage in Oak Bluffs.

Marguerite is survived by her husband and two sons, Philip A. Macy 3rd of Harwich and James R. Macy and his wife, Faye, of Oak Bluffs, and three grandchildren, Isaac, Philip 4th and Jeremiah Macy. She was predeceased by her siblings, Adele, Isabelle, Pearl, Marie and Robert Bonsall.

A graveside service was held at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs on Friday, Feb. 10. The Rev. Mary Jane O'Connor-Ropp officiated.
