George Yates, 93, Owned Vineyard Haven Drug Store
George R. Yates of East Falmouth died at the JML Center on Sept. 28. He was the husband of Margaret A. Pinto Yates, with whom he would have celebrated his 71st anniversary Nov. 7. He was 93.
Mr. Yates was born in Fall River, the son of the late James and Martha Winkley Yates.
He was a graduate of Durfee High School and a 1934 graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He was a director of the college and a lifetime and honorary member. Mr. Yates owned drug stores in both Fall River and Vineyard Haven, retiring in 1970. For two years he was chairman of SCORE (Service of Retired Executives) in Palm Beach county. He also worked in Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., part time for 84 years.
After retirement, he and Mrs. Yates spent winters in Boynton Beach for 22 years and in 1980 sold their property on Main street, Vineyard Haven. They then lived in Falmouth for 26 years.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a niece, Judith Quigley of Charlotte, N.C., and a nephew, James Yates of Atlanta, Ga. He is the father of the late George R. Yates Jr. and brother of the late David Yates.
A private service was held on Saturday, Sept. 30, in the family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven.
