Janet Hughes, 86, Was Oak Bluffs Summer Resident

Janet Hughes of Groton, Conn., and a longtime summer resident of Oak Bluffs, died on Oct. 7 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 86.

She was born in East Orange, N.J., on Feb. 2, 1920, the daughter of Charles Lloyd and Lillian Appel Smith. She married Roger F. Hughes in East Orange on Sept. 7, 1942.

Janet graduated from Mount Holyoke College and obtained her master's degree from the University of Rhode Island. She had been the librarian at West Side Junior High School in Groton for many years.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Groton and the Child and Family Agency.

She is survived by her husband and two sons, Peter D. Hughes and his wife Robin of Chesapeake City, Md., and Allyn F. Hughes of Groton, Conn.; a sister in law, Shirley Abington of Clearwater, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jeremy, Adam, and Kyle; and two great-grand daughters, Aida and Elizabeth.

A memorial service was held at the First Church of Christ Congregational in Groton. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Child and Family Agency of SE CT, 255 Hempstead St., New London, CT 06320. The Byles-Groton Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
