John P. Olsen 3rd of Centerville died May 20 at Cape Cod Hospital. He was 49.

John was born on April 8, 1958. He was the son of Florence (Debbie) Olsen of Centerville and the late John P. Olsen Jr. 

John attended the Tisbury School kindergarten and other classes for four years. At the age of nine, he was accepted to the Perkins School for the Blind. He attended the school for 14 years, graduating in 1981.

He was diagnosed with mytomic dystrophy. He was active in his younger years, even though he was blind. John loved music. He was loved by all the staff at the Kennedy-Donavan Center and the Gentiva home health aides.

He lived a happy life, and his family and friends will miss him very much.

Survivors include his mother; his brother, Zebulon of Centerville; his aunts, Esther Freitas and Shirley Smith of Vineyard Haven, Gloria Steere of Oak Bluffs, Janet Packish of Falmouth, Nancy Howes of Dennis, Emily Andrews of New Hampshire and Mashpee and Rosemary Finley of Alabama; his uncles, David Steere of West Tisbury and Stephen Steere of Georgia; and many cousins and friends.

A funeral home service will take place at 2 p.m. today in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Route 151, Mashpee.

Interment will take place at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, State Road, Vineyard Haven.
