George M. Barbash Sr. of North Haven, Conn., died on August 12 at the Veterans Hospital in West Haven, Conn.

He was born Feb. 12, 1918 in New Haven, Conn. George worked as chief inspector at U.S. Steel for 37 years until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as an expert marksman and received the Purple Heart and the European Theater and American Theater campaign ribbons.

An avid golfer, he often played at the Mink Meadows Golf Club and held the senior championship at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, Conn. He was a member of the Octogenarian Skating Club as well as a fine artist and illustrator.

Mr. Barbash was husband to and survived by his wife of 63 years, Alberta. He was the father of Vasha Brunelle of Vineyard Haven and his son George Jr., formerly of Vineyard Haven and regular visitor at the Holly Tree Lane house and other homes. He is survived by Vasha, George Jr., Noel and Joanne as well as four grandchildren, Lucas, Max, Michael and Rachael.

A Mass was celebrated at St. Therese Church in North Haven, Conn., followed by interment with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, P.O. Box 2097, Edgartown MA 02539.
