Marcy Freeman Slater, 74, died at home on May 1.

She was the wife and best friend of Bruce Slater, loving mother of James and Anne Slater, and Anne’s husband Jacques Lucchesi. She was the grandmother of Sasha Slater Lucchesi.

Marcy was born in Philadelphia in 1934. Her parents, Bessie and Philip Freeman, were both pharmacists and podiatrists. She was the cherished youngest sister of Joseph and Leo, who predeceased her.

Marcy graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in early education. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia, and continued working with children in the Montessori Young World Day School in New Jersey. After she retired, and moved with Bruce to the Vineyard, she volunteered as a tutor at the West Tisbury School.

A full-time resident of Chilmark for eight years, and a resident for 32 years, Marcy and Bruce celebrated their 40th anniversary at their home last summer.

Everything Marcy did reflected her vivacious and inquisitive spirit. She loved to bring people together, enjoyed friends of all ages, and will be remembered for her sense of humor, compassion, and empathy. Fashionable and filled with zest, she was involved with her community — as an active board member of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, a volunteer at the Chilmark Library, and a participant in the Chilmark Women’s Symposium.

Marcy was a passionate learner: an avid reader, a member of many book clubs, a traveler. She loved spending time with her children, and enjoyed gardening, exercising, and walking with her dog Rosie on the beach and in the woods.

She was a loving and attentive mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, and friend, deeply loved by all.
