Jeremias (Jerry) M. Vieira of Norton, formerly of the Vineyard, died on June 19 surrounded by his family at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 70.

He was the husband of Bernadette M. Medeiros Vieira, to whom he was wed on April 9, 1961.

Born in the Azores in St. Michael, Portugal, he was a son of the late Gabriel and Maria Miguel Vieira.

He grew up and was educated in Portugal. In 1969, he moved to the United States and settled in Edgartown. He made his home in Edgartown for 38 years before moving in February to Norton.

Mr. Vieira was a paint foreman and was employed at Edgartown Marine for 20 years before retiring. He previously had worked for several years at Grant & Carbon, also on the Vineyard.

An avid Red Sox fan, he took great pride in tending to his yard and grapevines. His family was very important to him and he loved to show his support by attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years; his devoted children, Lenea M. Vieira of Norton, Marilda V. Hollister and her husband Todd of Edgartown, Dalila V. Byrnes and her husband Eric of Walpole, Elsa Vieira of Plymouth and Inezia V. Adams and her husband Robert of Norton; his grandchildren, Michael Jackson, Nicholas Hathaway, Tyler Hathaway and Christopher Hathaway, all of Edgartown, Emily Byrnes and Joseph Byrnes, both of Walpole and Megan Adams, Zachary Adams and Jared Adams, all of Norton; his former son in law, Michael Hathaway of Edgartown; one brother and two sisters of Ontario, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was scheduled Monday, June 23, in the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Norton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
