Was Poet, Summer Visitor
Herbert Hoyt (Bart) Pease 2nd, 66, died at his home in New Britain, Conn., August 25. Born in New Britain, the son of Patricia (Swallow) Pease and the late Hoyt C. Pease, he lived in New Britain and has been a summer visitor of Martha’s Vineyard for nearly his whole life.
During his working life he worked for the Connecticut State Health Department, and since his retirement from his regular job he worked diligently and successfully as a poet. Over the course of his second and much loved career as an author, Bart produced many books of poetry and spent considerable energy bringing joy to friends and others around the world with his books.
Bart graduated from Mooreland Hill School in Kensington, Conn., The Hatch School in Newport, R.I, and earned a degree in Business Administration at Nichols College in Dudley.
In his younger years, Bart was a skilled athlete. He played varsity hockey in college, ran the four minute mile, and championed in the pole vault. There were few sports in which he could not compete and compete well. While his strong competitive zeal was clearly evident on the athletic fields of his youth, his enormous strength and character showed even more strongly over the past 45 years in which he worked hard, supported a cherished family, and battled the demons of a bipolar illness. He was a person who never stopped climbing insurmountable mountains, and throughout his entire life his enormous strength and ability to battle adversity was a guiding light to all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his entire family and by his many friends. In addition to his mother, Bart leaves his son, Thomas, the joy of his life; Joanne, the love of his life; two brothers and sisters in law, Colin and Pamela Pease of Concord, and Sam and Sarah Pease of Cohasset, and three nieces and two nephews. He leaves a legacy of love, strength and humor in the face of sometimes enormous adversity.
Mr. Pease is to be intered in Abel’s Hill Cemetery in Chilmark in a small Graveside Ceremony. His family will hold a memorial service to celebrate his life at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 830 Corbin avenue in New Britain, Conn., at noon on Oct. 11.
