Lois Caldwell Campbell, wife of the late Roy W. Campbell, died April 17 at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston. She was 79.
Born August 1, 1929, she grew up in Milton, the only child of Andrew and Hazel Caldwell. She attended Wheaton College where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and attended programs at Harvard-Radcliff and Boston College in business administration. Prior to moving to the Island, Mrs. Campbell had a successful career at Sylvania Power Products where she worked in human resources.
She moved to Martha’s Vineyard in the 1960s to work for Robert Douglas as a secretary. She later became business manager for Whitefoot Towing and Salvage. She worked with Capt. Roy Campbell in the successful operation of the tugboat Whitefoot for many years, before it was sold in 1983. Lois married Roy Campbell in 1986. With the sale of the Whitefoot she and Roy purchased a travel trailer and cruised the continental United States but especially loved their time spent in Maine, where Roy had built his largest fishing boat, the Roann, shortly after World War II. When unable to continue the travel life with Roy, Lois contributed her time to the acquisition of the Roann by Mystic Seaport; the boat is currently on display as the last of the eastern rigged draggers.
Lois was an avid reader and will be remembered for her devotion to her husband and their two Island black dogs, Snowshoe and Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven on June 6 at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mystic Seaport, Advancement Office, 75 Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic, CT 06355 or Wheaton College, Annual Fund, 26 East Main Street, Norton, MA 02766.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Chapman, Cole and Gleason in Oak Bluffs.
