Eileen Rose Averill of Edgartown died at Windemere Nursing Home in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, May 30, 2009. She was 92.

Eileen was born on June 8, 1916 in North Hero, Vt., a small farm town on the banks of Lake Champlain. She returned and visited there often.

Eileen’s four older sisters who were also born in North Hero predeceased her. Two nephews, Don Dodds and Bruce Poquette, still live there.

Eileen moved to the Island as a housekeeper for the Freeman Wallin family in the mid 1930s. She met Preston W. Averill Sr. when he was delivering groceries to the Wallin house on North Water street in Edgartown. They were married on April 12, 1941. Eileen was an active member of St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown. She and Jenny Danberg were founders of the annual May Breakfast, which continues to this day. She was a member of the Oriental Eastern Star of Edgartown.

Eileen is survived by her son, Preston W. Averill Jr. and his wife, Diana; two daughters, Corrine Hatt and her husband, Richard Stone, and Lorraine Leonard; as well as eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her former husband Preston W. Averill Sr. Eileen was predeceased by her daughter Diane McKay Averill in 2004.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 2 p.m. in New Westside Cemetery, Edgartown. At the same time, her daughter Diane’s cremains will be interred. All who remember Eileen and Diane are welcome to attend.
