Leo James LeBlanc, surgeon, died of cancer July 5, 2009 in Naples, Fla. He was 95.
Two-time survivor of polio and father of three, Boston-born Leo LeBlanc worked as a riverboat jazz drummer while a student at the University of Georgia before pursuing his medical degree at St. Louis University. While studying in the Gateway city, Leo met and married Anne Held from Dublin, and their marriage would span more than 50 years through Leo’s surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic, his practice in St. Louis, summers on Martha’s Vineyard, and the lives of their children.
Leo was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anne, in 1995 and by his son L. James LeBlanc Jr., in 2005. He is survived by his son Peter John LeBlanc, his daughter, Nancy LeBlanc-Gamewell, his sister, Mary Jo LeBlanc, and five grandchildren. Following Anne’s death, at age 85 Leo married Marie Burnham.
Interment will be private. Memorial contributions preferred to Carmelite Monastery, 9150 Clayton Road, St. Louis, MO 63124.
