Margery Benjamin, an accomplished poet and resident of Boston, formerly of West Tisbury, died Sept. 25 in Boston.

Margery Rose Hofstatter was born on Feb. 20, 1922 in New York city. She attended Julia Richmann High School in Manhattan, graduating as poet laureate, and was a national poetry award winner in 1939. She worked for several years at the New York World Telegram, where she met her first husband, Ralph Delli-Bovi, a sculptor and artist.

They married in 1947 and moved to Ridgefield, Conn., in 1952, where they resided for 40 years and raised five children. She received a bachelor’s degree in literature from Western Connecticut State College in 1972 and a master of arts in literature in 1981. She also worked as assistant to the director of the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield.

After separating from her first husband in 1989, she moved briefly to West Tisbury. She married Dr. Bernard Benjamin in 1992. They lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and shared a love of opera, classical music and gourmet cooking. They retired to West Tisbury in 1996. She was an active member of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center and a beloved member of the temple.

Mrs. Benjamin resumed a career in poetry in the late 1990s, publishing her first book of poetry, Song Spinner, in 2005, an anthology of over 80 of her collected poems. A well-loved poet on the Vineyard, she performed poetry readings on Vineyard television. Her poetry appeared in the Vineyard Gazette, Hagafen, and was included in an anthology of Martha’s Vineyard poets. After her second husband’s death, Mrs. Benjamin remained on the Vineyard for several years before moving to Back Bay. At the time of her death, she was finishing a second book of poetry, which will be published posthumously.

The loving and beloved matriarch of a large blended family, she is survived by her five children, Dr. Jan Delli-Bovi of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Dr. Laurent Delli-Bovi of Milton and the Vineyard, Meris Delli-Bovi of Boulder, Colo., Ralph Delli-Bovi of Los Angeles, Calif., and Lawrence Delli-Bovi of Ansonia, Conn.; two stepchildren, Dr. Robert Benjamin of Houston, Tex., and Ann Goldblatt of Norwalk, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
